Gloucester Rugby Charitable Foundation and Maddy’s Mark Launch ‘Maddy’s Captains‘ Programme to Empower Young Girls Through Rugby.
Gloucester Rugby Charitable Foundation, in proud partnership with Maddy’s Mark, today announces the launch of Maddy’s Captains; a transformative programme designed to promote positive mental health and physical wellbeing in young women through the power of rugby.
Maddy’s Captains is inspired by the life and legacy of Maddy Lawrence, who tragically passed away in March 2022 at just 20 years old from sepsis. Established in her memory, Maddy’s Mark exists to empower the next generation of girls to discover strength, confidence, and community through rugby. A sport that celebrates all body types, backgrounds, and personalities.
“Together, Gloucester Rugby and Maddy’s Mark are turning passion into purpose, empowering the next generation of girls to find strength, confidence, and community through the game we love,” said Simon and Karen Lawrence, founders of Maddy’s Mark and Maddy’s parents.
With a shared mission to remove barriers to participation, Maddy’s Captains will focus on reaching girls who may not otherwise have access to rugby, especially those from underrepresented and disadvantaged communities. The programme will offer six weeks of in-school delivery, both in curriculum and extra-curricular formats, led by Foundation coaches. These sessions are designed to be purposeful, engaging, and inclusive, providing a safe space where young girls can grow not only as athletes but as individuals.
Through rugby and classroom-based lessons, participants will also explore vital life skills such as stress management, teamwork, resilience, and navigating social media. Graduates of the programme will earn opportunities to visit Gloucester Rugby’s iconic Kingsholm Stadium, attend match days, take part in career workshops, and even play on the pitch. Experiences that aim to build belonging and self-belief.
